What does onboarding a new customer, retaining a customer, and upselling a customer all have in common? The answer to this is simple, each situation requires one very important piece: customer engagement. Hal Brierly, Founder and CEO of The Brierly Group, recently said “engagement is important – you need to get people to redeem things periodically. You need to understand what a consumer wants from your brand.” Keeping customers interested over a long period of time is an important piece of customer loyalty, engagement, referrals, and everything in between.
Key #1: Build a Community
In order for customers to engage, there needs to be a place or community to do so. Using social platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn help rally customers together with hashtags and mentions, allowing them to spread the love of your brand in a shared space. A step further would be implementing a hub or active community like Influitive, which can help increase conversation on a platform where customers are encouraged to engage with the brand, company, and each other.

Key #2: Fuel the Fire
Produce meaningful and engaging content. Learn about the customers’ habits and preferences to help shape what kind of content they are seeing by making it more relatable. Customers who participate in more tailored programs are more likely to continue engaging, which helps form a new advocate for your brand.
Key #3: Reward, Redeem, Repeat
But how can you get customers to actually engage? Implementing rewards and incentives are beneficial because they help drive the customer’s behavior. From our own experience at Tango Card, we really do think gift cards make the best incentives. As a branded currency with memorable and impactful benefits, we see the value in handing out rewards that people actually want and appreciate. Giving customers a mutually-beneficial reason to keep engaging and coming back for more converts them into a brand advocate, which is the strongest kind of customer you will ever have.
